Garden City는 도시 안에서 일어나는 인간과 자연 사이의 현대적 관계를 세밀히 살펴본다. 콘크리트로 지어진 환경 속에서 자연은 없어서는 안 될 존재이지만 여전히 무시되고 있다. 화려하고 매혹적인 모습이지만 정원은 과거를 보여주고 있다. 정원은 평소의 모습과 대중과의 관계에서는 드러나지 않지만, 국가의 자연사를 보여준다. 정원의 일반적인 낭만적인 기억에도 불구하고 자연은 인간의 의도에 따라 유연하고 실용적이다.

Marvin Tang은 과거 19세기 영국인에 의해 도입된 고무 씨앗과 식물원과 함께 싱가포르의 자연사를 조사한다. The Mountain Survey는 옛날에 화강암 채석장이었지만 현재는 공원이 된 언덕으로부터 발굴된 천연자원의 활용을 이야기한다. Woong Soak Teng은 나무 묶는 다양한 방식 뒤에 보이지 않는 외국인 노동력을 드러내고 인간의 타고난 통제 본능을 지적한다. 그녀는 바쁜 도시 활동과 우리의 주변 환경과 끊임없는 재생을 감추기 위해 자연 이미지가 어떻게 사용되는지에 대한 사진으로 예리하게 반영한다. 마찬가지로 인간과 자연의 공생 관계에 대한 이러한 고민은, 건축물과 함께 식물이 자라나는 모습을 보여주는 김선익의 Temporal Garden(시간의 정원)으로 표현된다. 이 작업은 우리에게 인간 행동의 무게에 따른 자연의 강인함뿐만 아니라 인간과 자연 사이의 지속적인 혼란에 대해 고민하도록 한다. Garden City의 내러티브는 오마주를 표현하는 Kevin WY Lee의 Suddenly the Grass Became Greener(갑자기 잔디가 푸르게 되었다) 와 함께 “정원 도시”라는 싱가포르의 공공 이미지에 대한 비판적 관점으로 이어진다. “정원 도시”는 고(故) 리콴유 총리의 국가의 가장 큰 정원에 기여했던 전략적 국가 발전과 비전이다.

DECK과 ArtSpace LUMOS의 공동 프로젝트인 Garden City는 싱가포르와 한국의 새로운 현대적 목소리를 선보인다.

Garden City examines the contemporary relationship between man with nature within the city. Nature in the concretebuilt environment has continued to thrive to become an indispensable presence, and yet, largely disregarded. Behind its lush and alluring portrayal, the garden attests to the past, bearing witness to the natural history of a nation though seemingly invisible in its present form and relationship to the public. Despite the common romantic association of the garden, nature is nonetheless malleable and utilitarian under the agenda of man.

Looking back into the past, Marvin Tang investigates the natural history of Singapore with the introduction of rubber seeds and botanical gardens by the British in the 19th century. The harnessing of natural resources from hills are narrated through The Mountain Survey, where remnant granite quarries are now public parks. In ways to tie trees, Woong Soak Teng’s observation of tree-staking reveals the invisible foreign labour behind the different ways of tree-tying, and points out human’s innate instinct to control. Her keen reflection continues with some pictures of representation on how images of nature are used to camouflage hectic urban activities and constant renewals within our surroundings. Similarly, this contemplation on the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature is articulated by Sunik Kim’s Temporal Garden where plants develop alongside built structures. This raises thoughts on the ongoing disruptions and constraints between man and nature, as well as the tenacity of nature under the weight of human actions. The narrative of Garden City continues with Kevin WY Lee’s Suddenly the Grass Became Greener that pays homage, and critical perspective on Singapore’s public image as a “Garden City” – a vision and strategic national development attributed to the nation’s greatest garden of all — the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Garden City is a collaborative project between DECK and ArtSpace LUMOS to present new contemporary voices from Singapore and South Korea.
