여느 누구와 다를 것 없이 나의 십대도 혼돈의 연속이었다.
미성숙 집단에서 발생하는 기이한 사건들이야 퍽 놀랄 것도 없지만 다름을 틀림으로 간주하며 벌어지는 현상들은 잔인하리만큼 모질었다. 우리와 다르다는 이유는 곧 그들의 정체성이 되었고 그들의 정체성은 때때로 폭력의 대상이 되기도 했다. 인권, 존엄, 평등을 배우면서도 그 배움이 묵살 되어가는 모순의 세계였다. 그 세계를 지켜보는 것만으로도 청소년기의 나는 큰 생채기를 입었다.

나의 작업 <바라, 봄>에 등장하는 피사체는,
그 어떤 사회적 배경도 환경도 짐작할 수 없는 그저 ‘어린아이’다.
이 아이들은 저마다 다른 사정을 안고 시설에서 생활하고 있다.

이렇듯 환경적 정보가 공개되는 찰나, ‘어린아이’의 모습은 ‘가여운’ 이미지로 전락한다.
실재로서의 존재 그 자체가 아닌 특정 형용사로 명명되며, 환경 속 대상의 단면이 전부로 치부되거나 표제화되기도 한다. 분명 특수한 환경에 놓인 것은 진실이지만, 역설적이게도 이 사실이 알려지는 순간 색안경 씌워진 삶으로 재평가된다. 이것은 사람들의 일반적인 통념에서 비롯된 것이고, 이는 우리가 대상이 아닌 대상의 배경에 초점을 맞춘다는 점을 시사한다.

우리가 부여한 프레임이 되려 누군가를 상처입힐 수 있다는 것을 자문해 본 적이 있는가?

아이는 맑은 만큼 강인하지만, 순수한 만큼 환경적 요인에 쉽게 영향을 받는다.
순수한 영혼을 지닌 이들이 본연의 모습으로 성장할 수 있길 응원한다면 우리가 부여한 사회적 존재로 그들을 규정하지 않아야 한다. 선입견에 사로잡힌 사고는 폭력과 유사하다는 점을 인지하고, 다름은 차별이 아닌 차이로 이해되어야 한다.

모든 사람은 그 자체로 이미 존귀하다.

그러므로 나는 사회적 배경이 더 이상 그들을 가리지 않고, 그들 역시 숨지 않는 날이 오기를 희망한다. 그리고 그들에게 진정한 봄(Seeing & Spring)이 오기를 바란다.

Seeing & Spring

Just as anyone else in that age, my teenage years were full of chaos after chaos.
There was nothing surprising about those unbelievable events took place in immature group, but the phenomena that were caused by considering ‘different’ as ‘wrong’ were brutally harsh.

The fact that they were different from us soon became their identity, and such identity sometimes became the subject of violence.

It was a world of contradiction where the human rights, dignity, and equality were learned and simultaneously disregarded.
Merely observing such a world made a deep scratch in my childhood.

The subject that appears in my work <Seeing> is just a 'little child' whose social background and environment is unknown and cannot be surmised.

] These children live in a nursery with different backgrounds, and if such background information is disclosed the 'little child' gets stereotyped as 'poor child’.

It is obviously true that the children are in pitiful environment, but paradoxically, the life is reevaluated through a colored glass as soon as the truth is revealed.
This is due to the general social norms of Korean people, which suggest that we focus on the background of the object rather than the object itself.

Purity is a strength of a child, but as much as the child is pure, it is easily influenced by the surrounding environment.
If we expect those with innocent and pure souls to grow up to their true nature, we must recognize that eyes with preoccupation are analogous to violence, and we must also break out of the frame of the biased social norms.

It is my sincere wish to see the things as they are.
In other words, I wish that their consciousness don’t get defined by the social presence that we set.

The children are beautiful as the way they are.
They brood a vast universe in their minds and run around the deepest dreams.
